Trust
"The ethical standard of Trust embodies fairness, openness and honesty. Members' professional relationships with students, colleagues, parents, guardians and the public are based on trust" (Ontario College of Teachers, 2018).
The resource I have found involves a conversation between two children of different backgrounds, religions, and cultures. This conversation models honest, and friendly conversation for students. The honesty and vulnerability these children demonstrate, which the Kid President in this video describes as "awkwardness", provides a foundation of trust for them to bond and become "friends."
The Kid President shares some "tips to make a new friend", which educators can view as a model or springboard to teach students about guidelines for discussions that are respectful. As further described by Cruz et al. (2014), "instructors must establish ground rules and discussion guidelines, engendering care, respect, and trust for one another" (p.22).
This video can serve as a helpful model for children to frame their discussions with "new friends", especially those who may be of a different culture. When honesty, openness, and kindness are shown in conversations, a foundation of trust can be built. This rings true especially in conversations about culture, or conversations with someone of a different culture, which people may want to avoid for fear of that "awkwardness" or vulnerability demonstrated in this video. However, as the Kid President demonstrates, "awkwardness is awesome." In other words, honesty, openness, and respect can build trust, and foster open conversations about culture, differences, and similarities that contribute to learning.
