My name is Amara Hannah, and I am a Year 1 Primary/Junior Teacher Candidate at Brock University. As a future educator, cultural inclusivity in the classroom is extremely important to me, so I can ensure all learners feel welcomed, represented, and can contribute their thoughts and ideas comfortably, as valuable members of the learning environment. Reflecting on my personal experiences as an elementary student in a small Southern Ontarian town, I did not have much exposure to diverse cultures within the classroom. As a child of Anglo-Saxon heritage, I was also naive, at the time, to the ways this may have affected my fellow classmates of minority cultures. However, I now know how crucial it is for students to feel included, so they can thrive within the classroom and partake in learning that is meaningful to them.
